Active Release Technique

Sometimes your body can do more harm than good in its attempts to make you well. This is certainly true when the natural process of healing includes excessive abnormal scar tissue formation that interferes with your mobility. Fortunately, an all-natural tissue mobilization modality known as Active Release Techniques (ART) can free your tissues and help your body regain its pain-free range of motion. Here at Healing Hands Chiropractic, our chiropractor in Greensboro, NC, offers this form of healing alongside chiropractic care and other non-invasive techniques.

How Does ART Work?

To understand the benefits of ART, we must first understand how internal scarring affects the soft tissues. When muscles, fascia, tendons, nerves, blood vessels, or ligaments experience damage from a sports injury, auto accident injury, or chronic strain problem, the body responds by creating scar tissue. Scar tissue is meant to immobilize the injured structure so it cannot come to greater harm while it’s trying to heal, but sometimes scar tissue grows out of control, forming lumps, known as adhesions, that trap tissues or even join them together. Adhesions can cause chronic pain, stiffness, and neurological symptoms. To make matters more complicated, adhesions often go undetected by standard diagnostic techniques, such as X-ray imaging.

ART solves the problems caused by adhesions by serving as both diagnostic tool and treatment method all in one. It’s a set of over 500 possible manipulations for finding and fixing areas of restricted mobility. Our chiropractor moves the part of the body in question, or has you move it, while feeling the skin for signs of internal scarring. Once adhesions have been pinpointed, additional manipulations can be applied to break up the scar tissue and free the tissues trapped beneath it.

A Valuable Aid to Chiropractic Care

ART has obvious value as a standalone treatment for tissue pain and stiffness, but it also works well as part of a larger holistic treatment plan. If we’re treating a nagging sports injury, for example, our ability to release old scar tissue and increase joint mobility makes it easier to perform successful, long-lasting chiropractic care. ART can play a role in the treatment of hundreds of different soft tissue and nerve entrapment conditions as a complement to laser therapy, Gonstead Technique, Diversified Technique, and other drug-free treatment modalities.
